Further on down the road…

I just got back from my trip down to Austin, TX for SXSW. The drive down there was great…the weather, sunroof open. I really enjoy getting lost in a different city to really put my size on the earth in perspective. It’s humbling. Meeting and talking with strangers is something I always love.

I stayed with a friend, met a number of really great people, ate some good food and listened to a handful of good bands. I went up to the French Legation Museum for a lawn party during the day and saw Camera Obscura. After that I was sitting in the grass waiting for the next band to set up and enjoying the paradise-like atmosphere out on the lawn on a great afternoon. The next band walks up accordian, violin and tuba in hand and sit down right next to us and start playing their show in the middle of the crowd. It was a great serenade. The band was called A Hawk and a Hacksaw and are apparently friends with (and very simliar sounding to) Beirut.

The last night I went to an outdoor concert to see Beach House. The Cannabanoids featuring Erykah Badu and Explosions in the Sky also played later. After we went to a latin restaurant/bar to see some world music and do some salsa dancing. We caught some bands from Brazil, Colombia, Zimbabwe and Mexico. I didn’t have much experience with salsa dancing but I got in there and did my best. There were quite a few professional looking dancers. I think a good rule is if you are in a place where you know people know what they’re doing…just say yes whenever you are asked to dance, you will learn something.

On the drive back I stopped in Dallas and took some more photos. Here are some below:
